Forward-thinking

I’m writing this post in advance.

I’m flying to Germany tomorrow – the end of a long Christmas/New Year’s holiday vacation has come – and I don’t want to miss my daily post before I even get two weeks into 2011. The question is, it’s been hard enough to come up with one thing to write about per day, let alone multiple wonderstuffs. So, what mysterious, provocative or intriguing thing could I possibly write about here at the end of the night when I should be in bed?

Forward-thinking is a common concept in our world. Enterprising and striving toward newer and newer innovations – it seems like we’re always planning ahead for something. From what new gadget I’m going to buy, to what the remainder of my week will look like work-wise, to what I’m going to eat for dinner… The List goes on and on and on (and, yes, the capital L feels warranted, so heavy is the responsibility we feel to stay “ahead of the curve,” to do whatever it takes to avoid falling into the drudgery that is the “same old, same old”).

I suppose that is the point of this blog. To make time for the little things – the tiny kernels of wisdom, the genesis of truth – that we so often blaze past when we’re concerned with what we believe are the important things. The big things. The stuff that matters.

I’m starting to realize that that stuff doesn’t matter quite as much as I grew up hearing and believing it did. All the big stuff does is stress me out. But the little things, the wonderstuffs…

I’m really hoping this gift of life is all about the little things.
